Search and Destroy

A few of us Snakes (Hayley, Doug and Andrew) have a little side band called Sweet Tooth Meat Tooth and we’re playing a fun show Thursday April 19th at the Hi-Dive with Land Lines and Ending People. Its one of a bunch of rad events curated by the MCA…should be a great night. Come on out!

The Living Coat

Join us tonight (that is, Tuesday April 10th) at City O’ City for the opening of “The Living Coat: New Works by Doug Spencer.” That’s right, not only does he play guitar and do magic, he makes rad art using smoke and Plexiglass. Stop by from 7-10 to say hello or catch it through May 6th.

Over the top!

A while back we were lucky enough to participate in the First Annual Douglas Mancroc Warhammer Probably Presents Illegal Pete’s Band vs. Band Arm Slam! What was supposed to be an event to promote and raise money for the Illegal Pete’s Starving Artist Showcase at SXSW was really just an excuse to arm wrestle our friends, have drinks and have fun! Congratulations to Chris Heckman of The Epilogues who won the whole damn thing and a big thanks to Illegal Pete’s for hosting and Ben Simkins for filming and putting this sweet video together…set to the tune of “Break the Same”! Enjoy.

Westword’s Best of Denver 2012!

Just a quick THANK YOU to everyone who voted for Sineater as “Best New Recording.” And Reader’s Choice to boot! We truly appreciate it Denver!

With all of the buildup — from the buzz that Snake Rattle Rattle Snake generated almost immediately after forming a few years back to the breathless accolades the group continues to collect — there seemed plenty of room to be disappointed with Sineater, the band’s first full-length. Fortunately, Snake Rattle Rattle Snake delivered on all of its early promise. From Ravi Zupa’s stellar cover art to the ominous clouds these ten songs conjure up with their angular guitar lines, pulsing bass and powerful percussion propping up Hayley Helmericks’s enthralling vocals, Sineater is absolutely riveting from beginning to end.”

I also wanted to mention that our very own Doug Spencer will be showing his art at City O’ City in April, starting with an opening on April 10 at 8:00…DJ Baby Grand will be on there playing some party jams. Stop by and check out his unique “smoke doodles.”

Jean Claude Van Van

Woah, it has been a busy and fun couple of weeks! SXSW was great, lots of rad bands and amazing Denver people representing down in Austin. Highlights of which included the 12 hour BDG leg that Magicylops put in, Tamale House and Sam’s BBQ, Bad Weather California at The Side Bar and getting to play 3 sweet Colorado showcases. Good times.

This past weekend we got to hang with our Salt Lake City homies Night Sweats and Laserfang at Bar Deluxe. Don’t worry, we’ll get these guys out here soon and when that happens DO NOT miss them. UMS, are you listening?

Boise, oh Boise. Why do you treat us so awesome?! Whatever we have done to deserve such love and positivity, may we never stop doing it. Needless to say, the very first Treefort Music Fest was a great success in my estimation. We had a wonderful time, saw great bands, ate delicious food and we got to play too! And meet Doug Martsch. Here’s a nice little write-up in Boise Weekly. Thank you!

A couple choice van shots for you…who would win in a fight?

A quick thanks to the Overcaster’s for a fun show Friday night, seems like Gathering of the Clouds was a great success! Land Lines on Thursday night was amazing. The best show I’ve seen them play yet, just love them! Another thank you to Tom Murphy of Westword’s Backbeat who wrote this nice review of our show:
Something must be in the water because everyone seemed to have reinvented their band in some subtle but profound and hard to pinpoint manner. Having seen Snake Rattle Rattle Snake from pretty close to the beginning I thought I knew what to expect. But this time around it’s obvious the group has spent some time working on its textures and separation of sounds. Sharp shimmers, icy atmospheres, layered rhythms and Hayley Helmericks has learned to harness her powerful and evocative voice in a way that has become finely expressive with that push still projecting her smart and poetic lyrics forward with emotional force.  Wil Helmericks clearly occupied the higher frequencies but there was such an undertone of menace and brooding fire that it really caught your attention. And of course Doug Spencer has that totally unique style of playing that is deeply rhythmic and cutting while occupying sonic territory across a broad spectrum. James Yardley and Andrew Warner created a driving and sometimes seething bottom end that gave the music a lot of its power and presence. Warner has fully integrated his acoustic set with the electronic percussion in a way that shouldn’t remind one of Lol Tolhurst but does in a great way. Best moment of the set? The dark, beautifully edgy “Break the Same.” In general, it was like seeing a band reborn in a better form than ever.

TBA no more!

Okay, the cat’s out the bag! We are the “Secret Special Guests” playing the second night of The Overcaster’s Gathering of the Clouds! Yeah! More information and tickets here.

Thanks so much to everyone who came out the the Hi-Dive Saturday night and helped us sell the place out! We had a great time with Men in Burka, Mancub and AVCC, who all made it one sweet dance party!

End of the Year Thank You’s and Future Fun!

Woah! 2011 was a big one for us and we are so thankful that we were able to put Sineater out  into the world. The fact that the album was received well was just icing on the cake! We’d like to thank the following for including us in their end of the year lists:

  • Twist and Shout (#2 local seller, #27 top seller overall)
  • OpenAir 1340AM (#17 album of the year)
  • Reverb

Looking forward we are pleased to announce our February 11th show at the Hi-Dive with Mancub and Men in Burka (members of Modern Witch, AVVC)! It will be our first show of 2012 and we already pumped up by the poster created by Mario Zoots! We’ll be playing some new songs (to be recorded soon!) and bringing some fresh energy into our live show. Next week we’ll be taping a segment for Sounds on 29th, a new show on Colorado Public Television showcasing local music. We’ll let you know when that will be airing…
Other things in the works: Douglasmancroc’s Armwrestling Competition, an exciting TBA show in March and SXSW. Lots happening and lots to be excited about!
